Do You Want Fresher Breath?

Greetings!

Love waking up to the smell of coffee? Think twice before you reach for a cup! Your daily dose of Joe — and other habits that can easily escape your notice — could be giving you a bad case of morning breath. But fear not! Bad breath, or "halitosis", doesn't have to ruin your day.

Pass on the coffee and cigarettes, but eat breakfast — and a nutritious one at that! After a long night's sleep, your mouth could benefit from a boost in saliva production, and a good meal is the perfect way to do it. Grab an apple for its high water content and crunchiness, both of which can help cut down on odor-causing bacteria. Yogurt and eggs can also promote saliva production while giving you a healthy serving of calcium and vitamin D. Get creative, but be selective, as some of your favorite breakfast foods may include not-so-breath-friendly ingredients such as garlic or onions.

Or maybe you need to change your sleeping habits?!

More often than not, bad breath is noticeable the moment you wake up. The problem may not be what you eat or drink, or even how your brush and floss. Instead, it could be how you breathe during your sleep. Breathing orally throughout the night can quickly turn your mouth into a haven for oral bacteria, resulting in a parched sensation and an unpleasant odor. Depending on the severity of the situation, something as simple as having a glass of water, sugar-free lozenge, or a humidifier on hand at night can help keep your mouth moist. Why not give it a try?

Join Us at Our Oral Cancer Open House on April 30th, 2014

During Oral Cancer Awareness Month, we are partnering with the American Oral Cancer Foundation for an Open House on 4/30/14 and offering oral cancer screenings at a reduced cost during the entire month of April 2014.

At the Open House Day we will offer complimentary oral cancer screenings from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.  An appointment is required and can be secured by calling us at 212-689-0024.

In addition to this, we will be performing oral cancer screenings until the April  30th, 2014 at the reduced cost of $39 (regularly $78). Half of the proceedings from the oral cancer screenings for this month will be donated to The Oral Cancer Foundation.

Oral cancer does not discriminate according to age, race or gender.  Early detection of oral cancer is most important because it provides a greater chance that treatment will be successful.  Symptoms include non-healing sores, growths and patches on oral tissues, gums or the tongue.  We will use Velscope screening exams to detect these abnormal cells before they develop into sores or lesions.  Velscope screens for abnormal changes in the oral tissues, so they can be treated before they develop into something more serious.

At Herald Square Dental & The Denture Center  we feel strongly about prevention and have been offering oral cancer screenings for years. To prevent oral cancer, we suggests visiting a dentist every six months for a routine checkup that includes an oral cancer screening and adjunctive oral cancer screening with Velscope.

Appointments are filling fast!  Call us at 212-689-0024 to book your appointment today!

Best regards,

For Valentine's Day Drink Red Wine And Pair It With Dark Chocolate - Both Are Good for Your Smile!

Greetings from Dr. Pasch, Dr. Yam, Dr. Shirzadnia, and Dr. Song!

Romance and love are in the air with the nearing of Valentine's day and if you were looking for an excuse to drink more red wine and eat chocolate,  you are lucky!

Dark chocolate has about four times the antioxidents of green tea. The same anti-bacterial effect of flavinoid and polyphenols is shared by the now popular green tea. As an extra benefit  seratonin and phenylethamine that are used as mood enhancers are present. What more can you wish for, chocolatey goodness that makes you feel happy!

A study released by scientists from Université Laval in Quebec, Canada, reports that
compounds in red wine known as polyphenols have been found to stave off periodontal
diseases. Periodontal diseases are those that affect the gums and bone around the
teeth, often leading to permanent tooth loss. The research shows that polyphenols,
derived from red grape seeds, neutralize one of the major tissue-destroying compounds
associated with periodontitis, a disease that affects a significant number of adults.

Red wine boasts a number of additional health advantages. It has anti-tumor properties
and can help prevent heart disease. Along with green tea, fresh fruits and green
vegetables, red wine has been known to reduce the risk of cancer mortality. Still, it's
important to err on the side of caution and drink only in moderation - no more than a
glass or two a day.

While red wine is preserving smiles across the globe, other sugary drinks are destroying
them.  Acidic drinks like coffee (a crutch for millions of groggy Americans each day) can have a negative affect on teeth as well. Even good old-fashioned juice has come under fire as of late, slammed for having a high sugar content but very few of the nutritional qualities attributed to whole fruit, such as fiber.
Your best bet? Drink plenty of water. If you do have a sugary or acidic beverage, be
sure to either brush your teeth or rinse with warm water afterwards.

Wishing you a very romantic and sweet Valentine's Day!

Use 'Em or Lose 'Em: Top 5 Reasons to Take Advantage of Your Dental Insurance Benefits Now!

Greetings from Dr. Pasch, Dr. Yam, Dr. Shirzadnia and Dr. Song!

Ever feel like you funnel money into a dental insurance plan that you'll never see again? Don't let your dental policy become a black hole! Take advantage of all the benefits they offer – benefits you're already paying for. Need a little motivation? Here are 5 very good reasons to use your benefits to the fullest!
  1. Yearly Maximums. Dental insurance plans put a maximum on the amount of money they're willing to pay for your dental care. Maximums vary from one company or policy to the next, but typically fall between  $1000- $1500. Sounds like a lot of money, doesn't it? Insurance companies consider this amount to be a good investment. Allowing you to get regular dental care, your carrier can prevent the need for more serious (and more expensive) dental procedures down the road. Why not do you both a favor and use it, ensuring your mouth is in tip-top shape when next year rolls around?
  2. Premiums. You're probably paying a monthly premium to keep your insurance. Even if you don't need extensive treatment, you should use that money for regular check ups and cleanings to prevent costly procedures in the future. Don't throw your money away!
  3. Deductibles. Insurance companies typically expect you to pay a certain amount of money for your dental care each year. If your smile isn't in good shape, our office can create a treatment plan to put you back on track. Deductibles begin anew each year, so spreading out this care over more than 1 year will mean you have to pay more out-of-pocket.
  4. Inflation. It seems everything becomes more expensive from one year to the next, and dental materials and equipment are no exception. Putting off necessary dental care could mean that you'll have to pay more down the road.
  5. Dental Problems Escalate. If your pearly whites are anything but, they're only going to get worse. That is, of course, unless you take advantage of your insurance benefits and tend to your teeth and gums. A little cavity that isn't bothering you one year may become a major  toothache (or a headache!) the next.
If you haven't yet taken advantage of your dental insurance benefits for this year and would like to schedule an exam to verify everything is ok with your dental health, call our office at 212-689-0024 or email us at appts@newyorkdenturedental.com today. We'll help you find which treatments are and  which ones are not covered by your policy!

Best Regards,

Herald Square Dental and Staff

P.S. If you have any friends or family members who you feel could use our services, please don't hesitate to have them call us. We'll be sure to take good care of them.
