For Valentine's Day Drink Red Wine And Pair It With Dark Chocolate - Both Are Good for Your Smile!

Greetings from Dr. Pasch, Dr. Yam, Dr. Shirzadnia, and Dr. Song!

Romance and love are in the air with the nearing of Valentine's day and if you were looking for an excuse to drink more red wine and eat chocolate,  you are lucky!

Dark chocolate has about four times the antioxidents of green tea. The same anti-bacterial effect of flavinoid and polyphenols is shared by the now popular green tea. As an extra benefit  seratonin and phenylethamine that are used as mood enhancers are present. What more can you wish for, chocolatey goodness that makes you feel happy!

A study released by scientists from Université Laval in Quebec, Canada, reports that
compounds in red wine known as polyphenols have been found to stave off periodontal
diseases. Periodontal diseases are those that affect the gums and bone around the
teeth, often leading to permanent tooth loss. The research shows that polyphenols,
derived from red grape seeds, neutralize one of the major tissue-destroying compounds
associated with periodontitis, a disease that affects a significant number of adults.

Red wine boasts a number of additional health advantages. It has anti-tumor properties
and can help prevent heart disease. Along with green tea, fresh fruits and green
vegetables, red wine has been known to reduce the risk of cancer mortality. Still, it's
important to err on the side of caution and drink only in moderation - no more than a
glass or two a day.

While red wine is preserving smiles across the globe, other sugary drinks are destroying
them.  Acidic drinks like coffee (a crutch for millions of groggy Americans each day) can have a negative affect on teeth as well. Even good old-fashioned juice has come under fire as of late, slammed for having a high sugar content but very few of the nutritional qualities attributed to whole fruit, such as fiber.
Your best bet? Drink plenty of water. If you do have a sugary or acidic beverage, be
sure to either brush your teeth or rinse with warm water afterwards.

Wishing you a very romantic and sweet Valentine's Day!

Severe Gum Disease Can Instigate Joint Replacement Infections

Greetings from Dr. Pasch, Dr. Yam, Dr. Shirzadnia and Dr. Song!

With the advancement of medicine and various treatment and surgical approaches, joint replacement has become very common nowadays. We bet your dental health is the last thing on your mind if you are preparing yourself for a hip replacement, for example, but you should know that  a thorough dental examination for presence of tooth and gum infection is recommended prior to joint replacement.  Here are the reasons why this should be done:

Periodontal disease is a commonly occurring oral infection of the adult population (80%
of adults are affected) destroying the bony support of the teeth. This infection slowly
progresses over the lifetime of the patient and is often manifested in the advanced
stage in the senior population.

Because of the lack of any discomfort to the patient until total loss of bony support to the
teeth, many adults are unaware that they have this infection. However, the bacteria from
this bone destroying disease, especially in the more advanced cases, has been
attributed to possible infection of joint replacements.

Candidates for joint replacements who have not been seen by a dentist in over a year
should be considered for a thorough dental evaluation of their teeth and gums before
surgery. Depending on the severity of the infection, treatment of gum infections and
tooth abscesses may take from two weeks to two months before the patient reaches
adequate health before surgery.

If you have questions regarding severe gum disease, please call our office at 212-689-0024

Denture Problems?

Greetings from Dr. Pasch, Dr Yam, Dr. Shirzadnia and Dr. Song!

Many denture wearers breathe a sigh of relief when they get their first pair of dentures, because they think their dental problems are over. Unfortunately, even the best dentures can't compete with natural teeth in ability to chew food efficiently and comfortably. As the years go by, the supporting ridges that remain after teeth have been removed gradually change and get smaller. For most patients, the dentures need to be "relined" or "refitted" every 2-4 years so that the denture will conform to the changing ridge. A large change in weight can also alter the shape of the mouth, causing changes in the fit.

Here are some ways to treat various denture problems:

Make sure your dentures fit. Over time, your gums and bones may change and your dentures won't fit as well. When this happens, your dentures need to be adjusted, modified, or replaced by your dentist. Never try to adjust your dentures yourself.

Speak slowly. When you first get dentures, it may be hard for you to say certain words. Be patient. Practice saying the challenging words aloud and speak slowly. If your dentures move around when you laugh or smile, gently bite down and swallow to put them back in place.

Eat soft foods. If you are having trouble eating, follow these tips: Take small bites of soft foods, such as eggs and yogurt. Don't eat anything sticky and chew your food slowly. When you chew, use both sides of your mouth at the same time. This prevents your dentures from moving forward or tipping. Eating will become easier as you get used to your dentures. In time, you should be able to eat most foods.

Use an adhesive ( zinc free). Denture adhesives help your dentures stay in place and make them feel more secure. But denture adhesives should not be used to fix old or poorly fitting dentures. When using an adhesive, follow the instructions carefully. Try not to use more than you need.

If you have questions about your dentures, please call our office at 212-689-0024 or email us at appts@newyorkdenturedental.com today.

Dentures and Good Oral Hygiene

Greetings from Dr. Pasch, Dr. Yam, Dr. Shirzadnia and Dr. Song!
Want to know more about taking care of your dentures? Here you go!

- How do you clean your dentures?
When cleaning your dentures, you should first rinse away loose food particles thoroughly. Then moisten your toothbrush and apply denture cleanser. Brush every surface, scrubbing gently to avoid damage.

- How many times a day does the denture need to be cleaned?
The denture needs to be cleaned two to three times daily.

- What is good oral hygiene when you have full dentures? In addition to taking care of your dentures, taking care of your mouth also is vital if you wear full dentures. This includes brushing your gums, tongue, and palate every morning with a soft-bristled brush before inserting your dentures. This stimulates your tissues and helps remove plaque.

-What is the proper denture care when not being worn?
Dentures need to be kept moist when not being worn so they do not dry out or lose their shape. When not worn, dentures should be placed in a denture cleanser soaking solution or in water. However, if the denture has metal attachments, the attachments could tarnish if placed in a soaking solution.

-Are There Alternatives to Dentures?
Yes, dental implants can be used to support permanently cemented bridges, eliminating the need for a denture. The cost is usually greater, but the implants and bridges more closely resemble the feel of real teeth. Dental implants are becoming the alternative to dentures but not everyone is a candidate for implants. Consult your dentist for advice.

-Does Insurance Cover the Cost of Dentures?
Most dental insurance providers cover some or all of the cost of dentures. However, contact either your dental insurance company to find out the specifics of what they will cover or our insurance coordinator to have your benefits clarified.

If you have any additional questions regarding dentures, please call our office at 212-689-0024 or email us at  appts@newyorkdenturedental.com today. You can trust us, we have been doing this since 1977!

Do your dentures fit?

Greetings from Dr. Pasch, Dr. Yam, Dr. Shirzadnia, Dr. Song

Age brings wisdom and the benefit of a unique perspective that can only be achieved through your life experiences. It can be a beautiful thing. Unfortunately, it also brings with it dental problems that may only be resolved with dentures. Okay, you have false teeth. That should be the end of it, right? Wrong. Your dentures will never change (assuming you don't play hockey or plan on running over them any time soon), but your mouth will.

The gum ridges in our mouths can shrink with age, which causes dentures to become loose. Bone can also shrink, causing jaws not to line up properly. Ill fitting dentures can cause sore spots in your mouth and stomach problems, the result of not being able to chew food properly. A loose denture could also cause changes in your facial features, not to mention become a nuisance the next time you go sky diving.

If your dentures are loose, painful or just don't feel right, call our office for a consultation. They may need to be adjusted, relined or completely remade (if they are completely worn out). You may have noticed some products that claim to fix unsavvy dentures. When we make repairs in our own on site dental lab right here in the heart of New York, we use quality materials that are only available to dentists. Over the counter product often contain harsh chemicals that only make matters worse.

If you're not satisfied with the look or feel of your dentures, please don't hesitate to call our office at 212-689-0024 conveniently located in Midtown Manhattan for an evaluation! It's important to keep future dental appointments as well so that your fit can be continually evaluated and you can be screened for oral cancer and gum disease. Your health and comfort are important to us; we ensure you we will give you a reason to smile!
