Have you heard of Black Hairy Tongue?

Although it is not seen often, we thought we should share this information with you. Black Hairy Tongue is not a disease, it is a condition. Black hairy tongue is the lengthening of the bumps (papillae) on the surface of the tongue. Usually the ends of the papillae get rubbed away by food but sometimes they grow much longer than normal, making the tongue look furry. The extra tissue can get stained by food or tobacco and become yellowish brown or black.

Even though it may appear alarming, black hairy tongue itself is harmless (although it is thought to be linked to the development of thrush, which is an infection of the mouth caused by the candida fungus, also known as yeast). This condition does not involve any type of bacteria or fungi and generally resolves on its own; the recommended treatment is to brush the tongue with a soft toothbrush twice per day. Black hairy tongue is listed as a possible side effect while taking the antibiotic penicillin, and certain vitamins. It is also a side effect of bulimia.

A similar condition can occur within 24 hours after taking Bismuth Subsalicylate, especially chewable tablets, caused by a chemical reaction. It is short-lasting in duration, but may initially cause alarm.

Do you suffer from:
  • Headaches( chronic or irregular);
  • Migraines;
  • Clicking/popping of the jaw joints;
  • Clenching and grinding (bruxism);
  • Tinnitus( ringing of the ears);
  • Muscle tension ans pain in the face and neck;
  • Sensitive teeth due to overloaded forces;
  • Broken teeth or dental work;
  • Uneven tooth wear and cracking;
  • Temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMD);
  • Limited range of head/neck motion;
  • Reduced mouth opening range;
  • Accelerated bone loss in periodontal disease;
  • Vertigo;
  • Ear pain not from infection?

If you suffer from any of these symptoms we have good news for you! Since the beginning of 2012 Dr. Arthur Yam and Dr. Alfred Shirzadnia have had great results treating these symptoms with the TruDenta system.

The TruDenta exam includes the use of two unique, patented technologies which in about five minutes can provide you and your doctor with important, objective, diagnostic information which may help identify the causes of your symptoms.  The first device measures the opening  and closing  of the mouth and the bite forces on a tooth  by tooth basis; both in motion and at rest.  Once completed, the digital bite force analysis provides a graphic display of the forces and balances within the mouth.

The second device measures the range of motion of the head and neck and instantly mathematically calculates  a patient's deviance from normal motion which can be signs of various conditions.

Your doctor will also perform a detailed head, neck, mouth, jaw and tooth examination to further identify any potential problems. When combined, these proprietary and comprehensive exam methods can show a doctor and a patient the potential problem areas which may be leading to a patient's unique symptoms.

No other dentist in New York is equipped with this unique combination of diagnostic tools and education which can often lead to immediate symptom resolution for many patients.

Dr. Ian Pasch serving the community through Donated Dental Services

Dr. Ian Pasch DDS, Director of Herald Square Dental and The Denture Center has been donating dental care for patients of the Donated Dental Services program since 2008.

The Donated Dental Services (DDS) program is a collaborative, direct way that the dental profession reaches out to individuals with special needs. Because of the extraordinary compassion of participating Doctors, DDS tends to the essential and comprehensive dental care needs of our nation’s most vulnerable people; disabled, elderly or medically-compromised individuals who cannot afford necessary treatment nor get public aid. DDS patients have slipped through the cracks of Medicaid and Medicare programs with nowhere else to turn.

Dr. Pasch has been seeing at least one Donated Dental Services patient per month and has provided care which would otherwise have been out reach for those who need it most. Our Donated Dental Services patients not only receive needed dental care, but they also gain oral health, confidence and last but not least, a great smile! Thank you Dr. Pasch and Herald Square Dental/The Denture Center for your great efforts and compassion!

A Holiday Survival Guide for Your Smile

The holidays are upon us, and ‘tis the season for a bit of togetherness (and a lot of indulgence). We don’t all celebrate the same holidays or adhere to the same belief systems, but there is one thing that seems to unite us all: comfort food.

Cold weather and sweets go hand-in-hand. What’s a good snowball fight without a warm cup of cocoa to come home to? Even in warmer climates, it’s difficult to dissuade dreams of sugar plums after a good night of classic movies with your family. So, while this "soul food" may be good for your spirits, take a moment to think about what it’s doing to your teeth.

How Could Something So Good Be So Bad?

Sugar can wreck havoc on your pearly whites. It’s a complicated process, but here’s the scoop. Bacteria in your mouth use your sweets as energy, growing and multiplying faster than they would otherwise. Some bond with the sugar to form a sticky glue called plaque. Plaque, in turn, produces acid. The acid dissolves the minerals that make your tooth enamel hard, and the surface becomes porous. The acid causes these tiny holes in the enamel to become bigger until one large hole appears. This is a cavity.

Does This Mean No More?

While ideally we would never expose our teeth to sugar or anything else that promotes tooth decay, that’s just not realistic. All we can do is try to minimize the damage. Don’t let your holiday routine interrupt your dental care regimen. Brush your teeth at least twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste (unless you’re a young tyke), and floss at least once.

If you decide to indulge in more sweets than usual, it’s a good idea to brush more often. If you don’t have your toothbrush on hand, rinse your mouth out with warm water. Certain sugar-free gums can help as well. Choose those with Xylitol, an artificial sweetener that can help prevent tooth decay. And finally, try to mix up your snacks. If you’re eating a sugary treat, try to also eat a bit of cheese (or a similar protein) as well.

Nothing warms a chilly night like a big smile, so be sure to protect yours. Please do not hesitate to call us at (212)689-0024 if you have questions regarding proper dental care, or would like to schedule a check-up or cleaning. As always, your continued good health is our top priority.

If you have questions regarding dental health, please call our office at (212)689-0024 or email us at appts@newyorkdenturedental.com today.

Best Regards,

Dr. Ian D. Pasch
